Support for students with SEN

Introduction

For better support  to the students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), the Tung Wah University of Hong Kong aims to establish an integrated policy for the professional coordination and procedures that can maximize the synergy across academic and administrative units for the benefit of our students.

All staff will take the necessary steps to identify students with SEN and support them to enjoy their studies and campus life at the University.

Commitment

All students are included and enabled to enjoy a full range of teaching and learning experiences at Tung Wah University of Hong Kong as far as feasible and practical in order to  to develop their talent and personal growth.

  1. The University commits to providing a diversity of provision to meet the various needs of students with special requirements, to the extent that is feasible and practical. This includes, but is not limited to, programmes adaptations, teaching and learning facilities, campus environments and the specialised equipment or materials.
  2. The University also affirms that students’ special needs may change from time to time, and that, as a caring community,   we commit to accommodate the relevant changes whenever  applicable.

Definition

A student is considered to have  special educational needs if he or she has a learning need that requires special educational provisions to be made.

Students may be considered to have a learning need if they:

  1. have significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of students at the University;
  2. have an individual need which hinders them from making good use of educational and campus facilities available to the majority of students at the University.

Application

Students with Special Educational Needs can complete and submit a Special Educational Needs Declaration Form

(student portal), along with supporting documents such as a  psychologist's report, registered teacher's report, letter from a medical practitioner, statement of special educational needs, or a DSE special arrangement note, among other relevant documents. All SEN students are welcome to declare their needs throughout the academic year. We would appreciate it if SEN students could submit their declaration at the start of each academic semester, as the administration process for arranging the necessary support takes time.

An individual meeting will be scheduled with the SEN students to evaluate and review their applications for special arrangement of assessments in Semesters One and Two.

An individual meeting would be scheduled with the SEN students to review the special arrangement for Semester Three upon request of the students; or otherwise, the special arrangement for Semester Three would follow that of Semester Two.

The earliest possible time to start the relevant SEN support services to the student as approved is ONE month counting from the submission of application to SAO.

All applications would be assessed by the SEN Coordinator throughout the year. Recommendations on support services for SEN students would be submitted to respective Programme Leaders for further review and approval.

Shall there be any questions, please contact SAO via email at sao@twc.edu.hk or telephone at 852 3190 6660.
