Dr. Yau is the Assistant Professor in Health Science at Tung Wah University of Hong Kong. She was formerly Scientific Officer in the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She received her undergraduate training at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Hong Kong, specialising in neuroendocrine research on melatonin effects in megakaryocytes.
She completed postdoctoral training at the University of Toronto, investigating melatonin receptor expressions in brain ischaemia using animal models. Her work encompasses infection control, food safety, HACCP development, and functional foods; she has advised on microbiological techniques for secondary school teachers, delivered food safety talks, and conducted over 10 years of microbial examinations for Hotel Nikko, Cathay Pacific Airline, drinking water, and recreational water.
As a visiting lecturer at HKU SPACE, she pioneered web-based teaching, developing e-learning resources in biotechnology, pharmaceutical studies, laboratory safety, and physiology. She has facilitated theme-based summer camps, work-integrated projects for freshmen, and study trips for occupational therapy, physiotherapy, health science, and nursing students, collaborating with NGOs and institutes to provide therapeutic services in overseas elderly homes.
Currently, she leads a project promoting Chinese Medicine cultures to ethnic minorities. She has received the 'Outstanding Performance and Achievement' award from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the 'Teaching Excellence Award' from Tung Wah College. She participates in programme validation and accreditation, collaborates with a private hospital on infection control studies, serves as a reviewer for refereed journals, holds a Master's in English studies with publications on Cantonese opera, and writes health-related columns.
