The School of Medical and Health Sciences (MHS) is a strategic hub for talent development in Hong Kong’s medical science and healthcare sectors. At MHS, we are more than an academic institution; we are a community of caregivers, educators, and changemakers.

Our programmes—from Biomedical Sciences and Forensic Biomedical Sciences to a suite of different allied health programmes—are designed not just to impart knowledge, but to cultivate professionals who embody skill, empathy, and a commitment to social good.

Our School drives multidisciplinary research in rehabilitation technology, cancer care, radiation safety, health education, and innovative therapies. By integrating technology, we strive to improve health outcomes, enhance quality of life, and shape the future of clinical practice and healthcare.

Advancing precision radiotherapy and survivorship care in rectal cancer
This research programme, supported by a Health and Medical Research Fund project and two College Research Grants, has quantified radiation-induced urinary toxicities in rectal cancer patients, applied genomic and machine-learning approaches to refine prognosis prediction, and developed a smartphone app to support survivors and caregivers. These efforts create a translational pathway from treatment planning to real-world survivorship care, focusing on improving outcomes and quality of life for rectal cancer patients receiving radiotherapy.

Reliable Biomarker for Urolithiasis (Incorrect title)
This prospective randomised controlled study has demonstrated enhanced motor learning, functional hand use, and participation in daily activities through a four-week, home-based robotic hand rehabilitation programme for stroke survivors with mild to moderate hand dysfunction. Key outcomes include improved hand function, level of engagement in daily activities, and quality of life, guiding rehabilitation practitioners in patient selection, optimal training duration/dosage, and enabling more stroke survivors to access intensive, regular hand rehabilitation at home with reasonable medical costs and evidence-based protocols.

The School of Medical and Health Sciences provides foundational laboratories and advanced specialty labs, delivering fundamentals and discipline-specific training to strengthen knowledge, skills, and clinical readiness across allied health programs.

Haematology Laboratory
Haematology Laboratory
Haematology is a subject dedicated to the study of haematopoiesis (formation of blood cellular components) and blood-related diseases. For example, thalassemia and haemolytic anaemia are examples of red cell disorders; leucopenia (low white blood cell count) and malignant leukaemia are examples of white cell disorders; coagulopathy (bleeding disorder) and thrombosis (blood clots block blood vessels) are disorders caused by the problems in platelets or coagulation factors. Students gain hands-on laboratory training in the haematology laboratory and use a variety of equipment and instruments, such as haemotology analyser and haemostasis analyser.
