Professor Chu is the Professor in Medical Laboratory Science at Tung Wah University of Hong Kong (Former named: Tung Wah College). She is a registered Medical Laboratory Technologist in Hong Kong and a Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Science (UK), with active memberships in the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). She earned her PhD in Cancer Research and BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, followed by a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the LKS Faculty of Medicine, University of Hong Kong.
She has taught in the BSc in Medical Laboratory Science program since 2011, serving as Deputy Programme Leader from 2016 to 2024. She received the Research Excellence Award (2019/2020) and Teaching Excellence Award (2018/2019) from Tung Wah University of Hong Kong (Former named: Tung Wah College). Promoted to Associate Professor and Associate Dean of the School of Medical and Health Sciences from 2020 to 2024, she now focuses on teaching medical laboratory science courses and pioneering foundational and clinical research in the field.
Her research centers on photodynamic therapy (PDT) efficacy and mechanisms in cancer models (including nasopharyngeal, gynecological, and colorectal cancers) using advanced laboratory techniques. She also applies computer-aided systems for cancer characterization and classification in histopathological slides, and develops NGS-based methods for miRNA analysis in cervical cancer. She has published over 50 research articles and conference proceedings, securing external and internal funding exceeding HK$6 millions from the University Grants Committee (UGC), Health Bureau, and Tung Wah University of Hong Kong (Former named: Tung Wah College). She served as a visiting research scientist at the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland, in June-August 2023 and July-August 2024. Additionally, she has been the Academic Secretary of the Hong Kong Medical Laboratory Science Society since 2020.
