Dr. Poon Wai-kwong has been serving as a local undergraduate tutor for foreign universities in Hong Kong since 1996 , with great recognition , and has been appointed as Adjunct Assistant Professor in The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Faculty of Medicine, Accident and Emergency Medicine Academic Unit since 2005. He was also previously appointed as Honorary Professor in the School of Nursing at The University of Hong Kong. He has served as a Contract Professional Consultant for various hospitals on healthcare professional training , as well as on hospital quality and safety matters. His expert areas are in emergencies, disaster nursing, infection control and prevention , and hospital quality and safety management , along with nursing informatics. He has been serving as an active Auxiliary Medical Nursing Officer for the Hong Kong Government Flying Services since 2002.
Prior to entering academia, Dr. Poon served in Hong Kong at various hospitals in Clinical Specialist and Administrative Management roles. He last served as Director of Nursing for Hong Kong Adventist Hospital from 2007 to 2011 and then served as Honorary Nursing Advisor until the end of 2015. He is one of the informatics pioneers in promoting Mobility Nursing using PDA and iPad systems in private hospitals. He was in charge of and built up a brand new operation theatre level floor; furthermore, he was responsible for setting up the only private hospital Minimal Invasive Surgery Training Centre there as well. Before 2007, Dr. Poon served in the Infectious Diseases Control Training Centre, Hospital Authority Head Office; and was seconded to the newly set up Centre for Health Protection, Infection Control Branch after the SARS era , posted as an Advanced Practice Nurse (Infection Control). He was responsible for hospitals and community infection control training and institutional outbreak control and management in Hong Kong until he stepped down as Director of Nursing in a private hospital.
In 2007, Dr. Poon achieved his Fellow status in Health Services Executives from both the Hong Kong College of Health Services Executives (FCHSE) and the Australasian College of Health Service Management (FCHSM). He was also granted Fellow Status for the College of Nursing & Health Care Management (FHKAN (Nursing & Health Care Management)) and College of Community and Public Health Nursing (FHKAN (C&PH –Occupational Health)) under the Hong Kong Academy of Nursing in May 2012 and May 2014 respectively. He has been serving as the President of the College of Nursing & Health Care Management as well as a Council member for the Hong Kong Academy of Nursing since 2020.
In 2009, Dr. Poon was appointed and served on The Nursing Council of Hong Kong as a Council Member for three years; and now he is still serving as a co-opted member of the Education Subcommittee. Besides, in that same year, he had also completed related training and earned his Legal Nurse Consultant title in Hong Kong.
In striving for informatics development in Hong Kong, he has been one of the Council Members for the Hong Kong SAR Nursing Informatics Association since 2005 and is now serving as the Chairman of the Association since 2012; and served as a Council Member for the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), (Asia Pacific) until 2014 , with the aim of promoting Healthcare Informatics Management in the Asia Pacific Region.
