Programme Description

The programme aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes necessary for competent gerontological application in diverse settings, while developing their ethical, responsible, and caring attributes and outlook in performing gerontological duties. Additionally, it provides students with opportunities to apply gerontology and interdisciplinary theories in practice settings, and develops their interest in and skills for professional and personal development.

Programme Objectives
  1. To equip students with knowledge, skills, values and attitudes necessary for competent gerontological application in diverse settings; 
  2. To develop students’ ethical, responsible, caring attributes and outlook in performing gerontological duties; 
  3. To provide students with opportunities to apply gerontology and interdisciplinary theories in practice settings; and

Year 1 Entry

For Year 1 entry, applicants should meet one of the following requirements:

  1. HKDSE candidates from 2024/25 onwards: Have obtained Level 3 for Chinese Language and English Language, Level 2 for Mathematics, and “Attained (A)” for Citizenship and Social Development plus one Elective/Applied Learning Subject at Level 2 (“332A+2”) in HKDSE.
  2. HKDSE candidates before 2024/25: Have obtained Level 3 for Chinese Language and English Language, Level 2 for Mathematics and Liberal Studies plus one Elective/Applied Learning Subject at Level 2 (“3322+2”) in HKDSE.
  3. Passes in AS Use of English and AS Chinese Language and Culture plus one AL subject/two AS subjects in HKALE and Level 2 for Chinese Language and English Language plus passes in three other subjects in HKCEE.
  4. International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma with a minimum score of 24 and fulfilled the English language requirements:
    • English A: Language and Literature (Higher or Standard Level) – Grade 4
    • English A: Literature (Higher or Standard Level) – Grade 4
    • English B (Higher Level) – Grade 4
    • English B (Standard Level) – Grade 5
    • English Literature and Performance (Standard Level) – Grade 4
    • English Text and Performance (Standard Level) – Grade 4
  5. Met the 2nd cut-off line of the respective province for admission to mainland key universities in the National College Entrance Examination (Gaokao) / Joint Entrance Examination for Universities in PRC (JEE, PRC) and the scores of English Language is over 100.
  6. Applicants possessed:
    • A qualification of a recognised Health Worker Training Course approved by the Director of Social Welfare at QF Level 3
    • 2-year relevant work experience
    • Required English competency level (overall band ≥5.5 in IELTS Academic Module within 2 years or equivalent)
    • Passed an admission interview
  7. Applicants completed:
    • Form 5 or above OR equivalent
    • Possessed at least 1 recognised "Relevant Working Experience" area at QF Level 3 in any TWO Clusters through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) mechanism in the Elderly Care Service Industry under HKQF
    • Required English competency level (overall band ≥5.5 in IELTS Academic Module within 2 years or equivalent)
    • Passed an interview
  8. Have obtained equivalent qualifications.

Senior Year Entry

For Senior Year entry, applicants should meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Have completed an Associate Degree Programme (AD) or Higher Diploma Programme (HD) of the relevant subject/discipline.
  2. Applicants possessed:
    • A qualification of a recognised Health Worker Training Course approved by the Director of Social Welfare at QF Level 4
    • 2-year relevant work experience
    • Passed an admission interview
  3. Applicants completed:
    • Form 5 or above OR equivalent
    • Possessed at least 1 recognised "Relevant Working Experience" area at QF Level 4 in any TWO Clusters through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) mechanism in the Elderly Care Service Industry under HKQF
    • Required English competency level (overall band ≥5.5 in IELTS Academic Module within 2 years or equivalent)
    • Passed an interview
  4. Have obtained equivalent qualifications.

* For the purpose of health worker registration with the Social Welfare Department, holders of International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma must meet “The Minimum Admission Requirements for Combined Health Worker Training Courses” of the Social Welfare Department (source) in order to be considered and admitted to the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Gerontology programme.

Notes
  • Tung Wah College will adjust the tuition fee of its programmes based on the Composite Consumer Price Index to be announced by the Government annually. 
  • Tuition fees are normally charged by two instalments per annum and are payable before the commencement of each semester. New students are required to settle the balance of the tuition fee for the first semester (i.e. after deducting deposit) upon programme registration in August. 
  • Students are required to pay additional fees for all retake/additional courses which would be charged at the rate of the normal cohort and be calculated by the number of credits to be taken.   • The tuition fee for the programme under the Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors (SSSDP) is the net fee paid by a student after deduction of subsidy from the Government. In 2026/27 academic year, the annual subsidy under the SSSDP is $51,880 for non-laboratory-based undergraduate applied degree programmes, plus an additional annual subsidy of $5,000 for this applied degree programme that have undergone the relevant accreditation. The annual subsidy amount may vary in each academic year subject to the decision by the Education Bureau. 
  • All fees paid are non-refundable and non-transferable. 
  • Following the Government's announcement on 31 July 2025 regarding the revised eligibility criteria for government-subsidised post-secondary student places and subsidies, the new arrangements will take effect from the 2027/28 academic year (with the application cycle commencing in October 2026). Students will be required to pay the non-subsidised tuition fees if they do not meet the updated eligibility criteria for government subsidies.

Graduates will have ample employment opportunities.

For example, they can pursue a career in social services as a community project organiser, or a project officer; in academic and educational institutions as an ageing-related service research analyst; in business or finance sectors as a pre-retirement coordinator, or a fitness trainer in silver-hair market; or public services as an associate researcher, etc.
 
Also, they can pursue further study in postgraduate programmes such as Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration) Programme, Master of Social Sciences (Gerontology), Master of Social Work, Master of Health Administration or Management, Master of Social Service Management, Master of Social Policy, Master of Psychological Medicine (Psychosis Studies), etc. in local or overseas universities or institutes.

TWC is one of the local pioneers offering a bachelor’s degree programme in applied gerontology and training students who will specialise in ageing. It is the first SCS-based bachelor’s degree programme related to gerontology in Hong Kong. I am a non-JUPAS local applicant. How do I apply for First Year Entry?

This programme is part of the Education Bureau’s Pilot Project on the Development of Applied Degree Programmes. Approval allows admission of non-JUPAS local applicants via direct application, limited to no more than 20% of subsidised places for First Year Entry. Applications should be submitted through the TWC Admission System.
