(1 August 2013 – Hong Kong) Upon announcement of the second HKDSE examination results last month, candidates have been preparing themselves for better planning of future studies, e.g. to apply for self-financing degree or sub-degree programmes. Tung Wah College is pleased to announce that around 80% of its admission quota has been filled prior to the release of JUPAS results. Students have secured their places by paying the enrolment deposit, which indicated their confidence on the programmes offered by the College.

(From left to right) Dr. Stephen Mann, Head and Assistant Professor of Department of Rehabilitation and Social Sciences, Prof. Thomas Wong, President of Tung Wah College, and Dr. Eva Chung, Programme Leader of the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Occupational Therapy (From left to right) Dr. Stephen Mann, Head and Assistant Professor of Department of Rehabilitation and Social Sciences, Prof. Thomas Wong, President of Tung Wah College, and Dr. Eva Chung, Programme Leader of the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Occupational Therapy, announced that the new Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Occupational Therapy programme will be launched in September 2013.

The College announced its latest enrolment statistics today. Prof. Thomas Wong, President of Tung Wah College, indicated that the College will offer a total of 1,165 degree and sub-degree programme places in the 2013/14 academic year (excluded the 50 intake quota for the newly launched Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Occupational Therapy programme). A total of 870 students, amounting to around 75% of the total intake quota, have confirmed their admission by paying HK$5,000 as the enrolment deposit. Based on the first-year degree places offered by the College, 563 out of 660 places have been filled, amounting to 85% of the total places. Besides, 194 out of 300 sub-degree places have been filled, amounting to 65% of the programme places.

Prof. Thomas Wong Prof. Wong mentioned that the College is satisfied with the admission scores. On average, the admission score of bachelor’s degree programmes is 17.6 points.

The College is satisfied with the admission scores. On average, the admission score of bachelor’s degree programmes is 17.6 points; in particular, the admission score of the Bachelor of Health Science (Hons) in Nursing programme reached 18 points, and that of the Bachelor of Medical Science (Hons) programme reached 19 points (equivalent to an average of level 4 in 5 subjects), with an upper quartile at 22 points.

According to Prof. Wong’s analysis, the College is having a growing recognition amongst the students, as reflected by a more intense competition of programme places in this year. "In addition, it is estimated that HKDSE candidates should have attained an average score of at least 22 points, i.e. level 4 or 5 in 5 subjects, in order to have a greater chance of getting a JUPAS place. In other words, students who scored 22 points below will have to map out other study pathways. This explains why so many candidates apply for self-financing programmes, leading to a domino effect, which resulted in a rise in admission scores.”

The College has been embarking on the development of a new occupational therapy programme in the past months with an aim of soothing the shortage of occupational therapists in Hong Kong. Prof. Wong announced today that the new four-year Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Occupational Therapy has finally been accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications and approved by the Chief Executive-in-Council. The new programme will be launched in September 2013. Prof. Wong expressed that “throughout the two and a half years since its establishment, the College has successfully launched five bachelor’s degree programmes with a total of 13 majors, and four sub-degree programmes. Such an achievement is a record in the tertiary education sector.”

The occupational therapy programme requires 137 credit units to graduate, with an intake quota of 50 students. It comprises courses like human biology, theories and application of occupational therapy, clinical research, traditional Chinese medicine, etc. During their course of studies, students are required to engage in no less than 1,120 hours of practicum, and an eight-month full-time co-op job. Tuition is calculated on a per-credit basis (HK$ 3,200 per credit). Graduates of HKDSE, HKALE, and Associate degree programmes are welcome to apply for this newly launched programme.

Prof. Wong also shared with the media the future development plan of the College. Numerous campus development projects will be conducted, which include construction of four medical science laboratories at King’s Park Campus; three occupational therapy laboratories and an English Resource Centre (collaborated with the British Council) at Mongkok Campus. The total costs amount to HK$10 million.

In the 2014/15 academic year, the College will conduct a review on its programme development strategies and restructure the programme curriculum, e.g. to reduce the intake quota of its Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) programme; to launch a new Bachelor of Health Science (Hons) in Nursing (Post-Registration) programme (intake quota: 100 students), which is tailor-made for registered nurses with higher diploma qualification; and a new Bachelor of Social Science (Hons) in Operations and Management of Non-Profit Organization programme (intake quota: 50 students). The College will also collaborate with overseas universities to co-organize post-graduate degree programmes. To accommodate with its programme development, the College will recruit an additional 32 teaching and non-teaching staff, including two Vice-Presidents, two Professors, and some twenty Associate and Assistant Professors.
