(1 September 2011 - Hong Kong) Tung Wah College (TWC) today welcomed its new students to the TWC family at the first Academic Year Inauguration Ceremony.

The ceremony was officiated by Mr. CHANG Juo-hwa, Charles, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, Mrs. Viola Chan Man Yee-wai, Chairman of the College Council, Dr. Ko Wing-man, Vice-Chairman of the College Council and Prof. Thomas Wong Kwok-shing, Founding President of TWC.

In her inauguration address, Mrs. Chan encouraged students to open their minds and be receptive to new ideas, and to benefit from a wide variety of learning opportunities in TWC by actively participating in co-curricular activities organized by student-led associations, internship and co-operation programmes, and mentorship schemes. "You should contribute to the community once you have made some accomplishment in learning; helping TWC become a renowned, featured private tertiary education institution of Hong Kong and Asia in the future."

TWC was recently successfully registered as an approved post-secondary college and is a self-financing, wholly owned subsidiary of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. "We are confident that with the integrity of our Board, Council and administrators, academics and students, the College will soon move ahead to become a private university in Hong Kong." Mrs. Chan added.

President Wong proclaimed to students the six missions of the College:- "To nurture socially responsible and caring citizens; to offer quality programmes; to provide a holistic and outcome-based education; to engage in applied research work; to be a celebrated home where students can pursue their learning and develop their potential; and to offer tertiary education to underprivileged young people with unique talents." Mr. Tsang Chin-wing, a first year student of the Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) programme, also shared his views on TWC. "TWC is a newborn baby and people are still curious about us. As a student, I urge all of you to introduce TWC to the public by creating our own culture and behaving our best." TWC has appointed Prof. Thomas Wong, former Vice-President of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, as the founding president of the College. The College has recruited 20 experienced academic staff from local and overseas universities. The College has admitted 366 new students from among 900 applications received this year for the Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) programme and Higher Diploma in Nursing programme.
