Tung Wah University of Hong Kong (TWUHK) is pleased to announce the launch of its first doctorate programme, the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing. Developed by the School of Nursing, the new programme marks a major milestone, making TWUHK the first self-financing institution in Hong Kong to offer a PhD in Nursing. The programme is designed for nurses and healthcare professionals who aspire to deepen their research expertise, translate their findings into practical solutions, and drive innovation in healthcare.

Professor Sally Chan, President of TWUHK said, “This first doctoral programme represents a significant milestone for the University. It reflects our unwavering commitment to providing a comprehensive education pathway from sub-degree to doctoral level with a strong applied focus. By integrating research with practice, we aim to address real-world healthcare challenges brought about by an ageing population and the growing prevalence of chronic diseases. Our applied research approach empowers students to generate new knowledge and translate it into practical solutions that improve patient outcomes and healthcare systems.”

Professor Lorna Suen, Dean of the School of Nursing, said, “The programme emphasises healthcare innovation, interprofessional collaboration, and leadership development, equipping graduates to tackle contemporary challenges in the healthcare sector. Supported by the School’s strengths in applied research, students will develop the skills and knowledge to drive advancements in nursing practice, education, and policy. This practical orientation gives our graduates a distinctive competitive edge in both academic and clinical settings.”

In response to the rapid advancement of healthcare technologies, the programme will also leverage the resources of the Translational Research Centre for Digital Mental Health (TRC–DMH). The Centre is dedicated to interprofessional and digital innovation research in areas such as social robotics, virtual and extended reality, and tele-health. By fostering collaboration among staff and students from diverse academic backgrounds, TRC-DMH supports a wide range of research activities that equip students to conduct impactful studies and contribute to the advancement of nursing and related fields.

The PhD in nursing programme will commence in the first quarter of 2026 and will be offered in two study modes: a 3-year full-time option and a 4-year part-time option. The programme aims to nurture critical and competent healthcare researchers and academics by enhancing students’ capabilities in critical analysis and methodological proficiency. Applications are welcome from individuals who are passionate about advancing healthcare through evidence-based practice and are committed to pursuing rigorous doctoral training under the guidance of TWUHK’s expert faculty.
