In support of the Hong Kong Government’s promotion of primary care and advocacy for preventive healthcare management, Tung Wah University of Hong Kong (TWUHK) hosted “Active Ageing: Wellness in Unity” on 20 December 2025, attracting nearly 800 participants. The event was organised by the Occupational Therapy Programme of the School of Medical and Health Sciences, with venue support from Chinachem Group’s Nina Park.

Under the guidance of faculty members and healthcare professionals, second-year occupational therapy students brought professional knowledge into the community through interactive experiences, promoting the concept of preventive care. The event focused on five common chronic conditions: (1) chronic pain, (2) mild cognitive impairment, (3) diabetes, (4) hypertension, and (5) mental health. It raised public awareness of disease risks and early symptoms while advocating for self-managed health habits. Through student-community engagement, the event fostered intergenerational inclusion and supported overall community wellbeing.

TWUHK selected Nina Park in alignment with the “Nina Park Community Placemaking Programme”, which blends edutainment and cultural entertainment to foster cross-sector collaboration and social inclusion. By partnering with various organisations and integrating education, culture, and health, Nina Park serves as a vibrant cultural space that encourages community interaction. Chinachem Group aims to connect stakeholders, promote healthy living, and realise the vision of “co-creating sustainable social value” through this platform.

“Active Ageing: Wellness in Unity” was open to the public free of charge, allowing students to apply what they had learnt through a variety of interactive activities, build professional skills and empathy, and share preventive health concepts to strengthen community connections. The programme included a dedicated session for secondary school students and activities for the general public. In the morning, secondary school students attended a career orientation and life planning talk on Occupational Therapy to explore professional pathways, while the public joined the following free activities:

  • Tips for lifestyle restructuring and home training

Interactive Health Education Seminar Led by occupational therapy students and healthcare professionals from TWUHK, this seminar focused on the five major chronic diseases, offering practical tips for prevention and management.

Experiential Health Activities Two innovative health and wellness programmes were designed by registered occupational therapists invited by Nina Park:

  • Drum Fitness: This activity integrated neurologic music therapy and occupational therapy approaches, using rhythmic activities to stimulate participants' cognitive functions and enhance neuroplasticity.
  • Laughter Fitness: This aerobic exercise focused on laughter, incorporating breathing, muscle relaxation, and movement to achieve holistic health goals. Occupational therapists highlighted that laughter can enhance immunity, improve cardiovascular function, and relieve stress.

Professor David Man, Vice President (Academic) of TWUHK, said, “We are deeply grateful to Chinachem Group’s Nina Park for its generous sponsorship, which enabled the smooth running of this event and offered our students a valuable opportunity to apply their learning in a real community setting, transforming classroom theory into practical experience in service of the public. TWUHK is committed to advancing vocational and professional education and training (VPET). Our programmes embody the key features of a University of Applied Sciences, combining theory and practice to develop students’ applied skills and lay a solid foundation for their future professional careers.”
