(30 June 2016 – Hong Kong) Early childhood plays a pivotal role in shaping child's development of cognition personality and value. Quality early childhood education gives children a strong foundation for all-rounded development and lifelong learning. It is believed that children benefit most when their teachers have professional training on early children education. In view of the implementation of free quality kindergarten education policy from 2017/2018 in Hong Kong, Tung Wah College (TWC) is launching Higher Diploma in Early Childhood Education (HDECE) to address society's demands. The programme aims to train students to be qualified early childhood educators through equipping them with the relevant professional knowledge, skills and attitudes.
The programme uses diversified approaches to enhance students' learning with emphases on both theories and practical applications. The programme will cover a broad range of knowledge about children's development and learning needs from birth-through-age-8 and include specialized courses such as human qualities and family dynamics etc. Education for children with Special Education Need (SEN) is another unique feature of the programme. Having involved our teaching staff with expertise in disciplines such as Occupational Therapy and Nursing in designing and teaching the courses in SEN, it enables our HDECE students to understand and apply knowledge of the unique characteristics of children in the period of early childhood development. In summary, the programme aims to nurture students who are knowledgeable in supporting children's holistic growth and has professional commitment necessary to promote children's learning.
A key component of the programme is to provide students with hands-on field experiences. Supervised by qualified and experienced teachers, students will have the opportunity to attend training workshops, field observations, and complete 320 hours of practicum at different pre-school settings. On the one hand, students can learn and apply theories in real-life classrooms to develop skills under supervision. On the other hand, they can gain exposure to the pre-school institutions and learn to better adapt to the setting before entering the workforce. The College will also arrange visits to different pre-school institutions, and organize professional talks to share frontline experiences with students, in hope of equipping graduates with knowledge of different aspects of early childhood education for their future pursuit as professional educators.
Ms. May Ng, the Programme Leader of HDECE and Senior Lecturer of School of Arts and Humanities said, “Education is a lifelong mission. Through the two-year programme, we hope students will be able to master the professional knowledge, experience personal growth, develop reflective ability, as well as to cultivate their devotion to education.” In addition to professional knowledge and skills, the programme stresses the importance of students’ personal qualities, moral ethics and professionalism. Teachers will also work closely with students and guide them to become sincere, caring and responsible educators step by step. President Professor Yu-Hon Lui said that, “Tung Wah College was established and is fully supported by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs), one of the local major education services provider which operates 30 kindergartens and pre-schools. TWGHs is highly reputable and experienced in providing early childhood services, the College is therefore in great advantage.”
Graduates of the programme are recognised by the Education Bureau (EDB) as meeting the requirement for registration as Qualified Kindergarten Teachers under the Education Ordinance, and eligible for registration as Child Care Workers (CCW) and Child Care Supervisors (CCS) under the Child Care Services Ordinance of the Social Welfare Department (SWD). Graduates will have excellent career prospects, they can teach in pre-schools, nurseries, kindergartens, international schools, special needs educational centers; lead playgroups and work in other pre-school institutions. Graduates may also pursue a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or similar disciplines at other local and overseas institutions.
