(24 May 2016) President Prof. Yu-hon Lui, together with Prof. Matthew Yau (Acting Dean of School of Arts and Humanities) and Programme Leaders including Dr. Humphry Hung (Programme Leader of Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) in Entrepreneurship and Management), Dr. Lynn Tang (Programme Leader of Higher Diploma in Psychology), Dr. Florence Wong (Programme Leader of Higher Diploma in Nursing) shared with media the recent launch of new programmes and other College development at a press conference held on 24 May 2016.
Expanding academic scope through introduction of new programmes Tung Wah College (TWC) strives to excel in its academic development.  In the upcoming academic year (2016/2017), the College will offer several new programmes in various disciplines (including entrepreneurship, nursing, early childhood education and psychology) to address the needs of the society and nurture talents for different industries:

(i) Introduction of Hong Kong’s first Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) in Entrepreneurship and Management programme to support Government’s policy that encourages entrepreneurship and establishment of start-up businesses, and provide formal education to those interested in starting their own business.
(ii) Launch of Higher Diploma in Psychology programme to meet the increasing demand on counselling services by equipping students with foundational psychological knowledge.
(iii) Re-launch of Higher Diploma in Nursing programme to provide new blood to meet the acute shortage of nursing manpower in the society. Graduates will be equipped with necessary knowledge, skills and attitude to meet the statutory requirements to enrol with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong as an Enrolled Nurse (EN) and then work in hospitals, community, and residential care settings of publicly and privately owned organisations as well as non-profit organisations.

Additionally, TWC has been developing a number of other new programmes for coming years in order to provide multiple study pathways for students. Planning and relevant accreditation exercises are currently in progress.

Maintaining competitiveness in healthcare education
Apart from expanding academic scope, TWC continues to consolidate its strength in healthcare education.  TWC is pleased to announce that its Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Occupational Therapy programme has gained recognition of the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) Council recently.  It means that our graduates will have a qualification that is recognised internationally. The assessment of Bachelor of Medical Science (Hons) – Major in Medical Laboratory Science and Radiation Therapy also moves into its final stage.
Acquiring Programme Area Accreditation (PAA) status to pursue university title President Prof. Yu-hon Lui said, “The vision of TWC is to become a renowned private university. To achieve this goal, we have to gain PAA status in at least three academic areas. Therefore, the College will strengthen its development in both healthcare and non-health education simultaneously to enhance its academic scope and to provide programme in a variety of disciplines. I do hope that the College will be able to gain a PAA status in the next few years.”

Adjusting tuition fee of individual programmes and establishing new scholarship In view of its steady development and increase of number of students to over 2,000, the College conducted a thorough review on the allocation of resources, programme operations as well as the learning and teaching facilities in recent months to ensure the cost-effectiveness and quality of the academic programmes. To make the best use of resources for the most benefits of students, the College has decided to set up more laboratories, add a new Vice-President (Academic) post, recruit additional senior academic staff, establish new scholarships and also adjust the tuition fees of certain programmes.
Starting from 2016/2017, the tuition fee for the "laboratory-based" BHSc (Hons) Major in Nursing will be increased by 3.1%. For the two “non-laboratory based” programmes, BBA (Hons) and BSocSc (Hons), the concerned tuition fees will be reduced by 8.6% and 17% respectively. The tuition fees of other programmes will remain unchanged.
In compliance with the “Lock-in” policy of tuition fees, the adjustments will apply to the 2016/2017 cohort only. Current students will not be affected. To recognise the outstanding academic performance of the BBA (Hons) and BSocSc (Hons) students and relieve their financial burden, a new scholarship will be established to award those who have completed at least 30 credits and attained a year GPA of 3.0 or above in the concerned academic year. Each eligible student will be awarded a scholarship of HK$10,000 in an academic year.
