Tung Wah College Development Plan for 2013(3 January 2013 - Hong Kong) Since its establishment in 2010, Tung Wah College (TWC) is fully supported by various sectors including private and corporate donations to facilitate the development of the school. As we entered the year 2013, the college has set goals and aim to become a renowned private university for health services and related disciplines before long.

TWC has recently received two kind and generous donations of $1 million respectively from well-known philanthropist Dr. Lee Shiu and his wife Dr. Jennie Mui Lee, and Dr. Samson Sun, MBE, JP, Chairman of the Association of Chairmen of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals and Mr. Paul Yu, BBS, MBE, JP, Chairman of the Scholarship Committee of the Association. The donations will be allocated to the Matching Grant Scheme for the Post-Secondary Education Sector for matching.

Mrs. Viola Chan, Chairman of the Board of Governors and College Council, expressed her wholehearted gratitude to all donors for their generous and thoughtful gift at the cheque presentation ceremony and said, "Since TWC was included in the matching scheme, the college strives to tap more funding resources and scholarships to support student learning, to enhance the teaching quality and to develop any subject-related research. The College Council has decided to set up a fund-raising advisory board which will be responsible for the setting up of fund-raising goals and principles. We target to raise $60m donations and to allocate this sum to match the government funds."

Donation from Dr. Lee Shiu would be used for English enhancement project. 500 students would be subsidized to join the Toastmaster Club and be encouraged to participate in Club's activities to enhance their public speaking and communication skills. The other donation from the Association of Chairmen of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, together with the other donations of the College with a total value of $ 5 million dollars, would be used to establish various entrance scholarships and merit scholarships for students.

Mrs. Viola Chan continues to announce several development plan of the College. To attract more young professors joining TWC, the College would establish four Endowed Professorships in Health Science, Medical Science, Social Science and Non-Profit Organization Management disciplines. The minimum gifts of each professorship are $5 million dollars for 5 years which could support the professor's research-related expenses.

To encourage open-discussion learning atmosphere, TWC will introduce the concept of the Learning Commons. Learning space will be reconstructed where shared or common zone, reading centers and multi-media workshop would be provided. The college would also identify suitable venues near the main campus to establish individual workstations for self-paced learning and discussion. The project is expected to cost about $10 million. Professor Thomas Wong, President of TWC, added that open, amiable and a sharing spirit would be the characteristic of the area, which facilitate communication and brain-storming progress between teachers and students.

The facilities of TWC must also be upgraded to become a renowned private university. To this end, the College Council has decided to apply for $56m interest-free start up loan from EDB to upgrade the learning facilities including establishment and optimization of laboratories, multi-media studio, Lecture Theater and classrooms, information system and audio-visual equipment in order to enhance the teaching quality.
