Management of social and business sustainability involves handling a multiple bottom line, balancing social, environmental, and economic/financial objectives. Social enterprises need financial sustainability to continue solving social problems. Non-profit organisations (NPOs) rely on steady funding to maintain social programmes. Companies practicing CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) or CSV (Creating Shared Value) must address social and environmental issues while generating economic value. The key is simultaneously managing opportunities, objectives, and risks, which may sometimes conflict.
Students gain transdisciplinary knowledge on managing multiple bottom lines across different organisational types. Core Business Administration courses include Management, Strategic Management, Marketing, Economics, Accounting, Finance, Statistics, and Data Management. Social Sustainability-related courses include Social Entrepreneurship, Social Innovation, Community Development, CSR, NPO Management, Fundraising & Donor Relations, Philanthropy, and Social Impact Measurement. Students learn how to integrate theory and practice to balance social, environmental, and economic goals.
The programme emphasizes experiential learning and real-world application. Practical skills gained include mapping community aspirations, needs, and assets; using design thinking for social problem-solving; applying futures thinking for anticipating and shaping future challenges; and conducting social return on investment (SROI) analysis. Students also have opportunities for internships, capstone projects, and overseas study tours. They learn problem identification, solution development, and sustainable management across social enterprises, NPOs, and companies with CSR/CSV programmes.
No. This is the first accredited undergraduate programme in Hong Kong combining core Business Administration courses with Social Sustainability-related courses.
Graduates can work in social enterprises, NPOs, or companies practicing CSR/CSV, where organisations value polymath employees who can apply transdisciplinary knowledge. They may also start their own social enterprises or pursue related postgraduate programmes locally or overseas.
